Begun in 1944 and finally published in its complete form in 1970, the New American Bible is a completely new translation from the original languages and the ecumenical achievement of both Catholic and non-Catholic Biblical scholars. It was commissioned by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine and produced in cooperation with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The fourth edition is the basis of the current Roman lectionary in the United States.
A solid, very literal translation highly favored among Catholics. The RSV-CE differs from the RSV not only in that it includes the deuterocanonical texts, but also in the New Testament some slight variations are chosen in order to better illuminate traditional Catholic interpretations.
The Douay-Rheims Bible was produced by Catholic scholars at the English College at Douai and Rheims, France. It was published in its entirety in 1609, two years before the Kind James Version. Revisions for readability were made by Bishop Richard Challoner between 1749 and 1752. A literal translation of the Latin Vulgate, Douay-Rheims was for Catholics the authoritative English translation for centuries.
Commissioned by Pope Damasus I, the Latin Vulgate is St. Jerome's translation of the Bible in the common Latin of his time. It is vital to the life of the Church and even today is the official translation of the Latin rite.
